In early January 2012, Jewish members of the UK combined military services came together for a weekend of fellowship and study. Around 70 people, including serving and retired service personnel and their families, attend the event at Amport House, Andover in Hampshire the training base for all UK military padres.
The highlight of the weekend was a wine tasting event on the Saturday evening, organised by the Golan Heights Winery’s UK distributor, Just Israeli Wine. During the course of 90 minutes attendees were given a brief presentation on the superb vine growing conditions of the Golan Heights, such as snowy winters, hot summers and a highly fertile soil, which was followed by wine sampling.
Event organiser Philip Allott, who presented the wines, said: “The event was very popular with attendees. Most people were also surprised at the extensive range of high quality wines that the Golan Heights Winery produces.”
Guests tried six different wines starting with whites comprising the 2010 Yarden Sauvignon Blanc, 2006 Yarden Chardonnay and 2010 Golan Moscato, followed by the 2009 Gamla Pinot Noir, 2007 Yarden Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2005 Yarden Syrah red.
Everybody who attended enjoyed the wines with the light Golan Moscato and the full bodied Yarden Syrah, both proving the most popular.
As a result of the event, Just Israeli Wine is now offering an additional service. For 30 or more people it will provide the wine at a discount, with tasting notes and general guidance. For groups in excess of 70, subject to the covering of travel costs, Just Israeli Wine will provide someone to talk about the different wines and manage the wine tasting. Suitable for Jewish and non-Jewish families, the tasting is highly informative and includes a little history and lots of background knowledge.
