Barkan: Two New Releases (K)

This afternoon I attended the unveiling of two new wines from Barkan. Two good wines, indeed two very good wines but I do wonder from time to time why some wineries feel they have to wine and dine the critics every time they release a few new wines. Don't misunderstand - I enjoy early dinners at Chloelys as much as anyone else (and tomorrow I will be attending another at Maraboo) but would it not be simpler, less expensive and less time consuming for all simply to send the bottles to the homes or offices of those critics the winery wants to reach?
But then again, who am I to fight the system, especially if those meals have a positive influence and call for more positive reviews on at least some of those who write about wine. Whatever, two fine wines and my tasting notes follow.

Barkan, Shiraz, Superieur, 2006: Dark garnet, medium- to full-bodied, a soft, round wine with silky tannins integrating nicely and showing a generous array of raspberries, red currant and chocolate aromas and flavors, those opening to reveal a gentle note of smoked sawdust. Tannins and light leathery notes rise on the generous finish. Well crafted. Drink now-2012. Score 91. NIS 190. K (Tasted 14 Jun 2009)
Barkan, Chardonnay, Reserve, 2008: Golden straw in color, with a light wood influence and fine acidity that highlight flavors and aromas of citrus, mango and pineapple on a lightly peppery background. Round, refreshing and complex enough to grab the attention. Drink now-2011. NIS 44. Score 88. K (Tasted 14 Jun 2009) |
