Three in Carmel's Appellation Series (K)
 11.07.2010
By: Daniel Rogov

Carmel has just announced the official release of three wines in their Appellation series which is sometimes known as the Regional series and in Hebrew of course as Ayzorit. I have tasted each of these wines earlier, so these were all re-tastings. Two truly fine reds at prices that represent excellent value for money and a white that may be just a bit of a gamble.

Regional, Carignan, Old Vines, Zichron Ya’akov, 2007: Made from thirty-year-old vines, blended with 10% Petit Verdot, oak-aged (minimal new oak) for 14 months. Dark garnet, a fruit-forward blend showing blackcurrant, vanilla and violet notes on a background of fine tannins. Full-bodied, with abundant fruits and fine balance, needs a bit of time for the elements to come together. Drink now-2013.NIS 80. Score 91. K

Regional, Cabernet Sauvignon-Shiraz, Upper Galilee, 2007: A blend of equal parts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, those developed for 12 months in 30% new oak, the balance being older, showing gentle sweet and spicy oak. With the Shiraz clearly dominant, showing full-bodied, with soft tannins and opening to reveal red and black berries, plums and a hint of saddle leather. Finishes long and spicy. Drink now. NIS 65. Score 90. K

A special note is in order for the 2009 Chardonnay release in the series, for I have now tasted the wine five times in all and on each occasion finding rather large variation between bottles. Re-tasted again today and that makes three fine tastings and two that were not so fine.

Regional, Chardonnay, Upper Galilee, 2009 : Light golden straw in color, with a nose rich with citrus flowers but flavors that are subdued, showing quince, apple and pear compote and herbal notes that may not be appreciated by all. Be prepared for major bottle variation with this release. Drink now. NIS 56. Average Score After Multiple Tastings 85. K

Even more exciting – this Thursday I shall be attending the official unveiling of the 2007 Limited Edition from Carmel and the 2007 Yatir Forest wines. I shall definitely report back immediately after the tasting.

Best
